Interested in Modelling? Tips For Helping You Succeed

Modelling is undoubtedly one of the most fiercely competitive working industries of the modern day (I should know as I’ve modeled professionally for many years). There are so many young men and women who are looking to make it in this area, however, there is no room for everybody to become a top model. This post is designed to ensure you use all of the tools at your disposal to help you succeed. So, keep reading to discover some secrets of becoming a thriving model in today’s market.

•    Love what you do and let it show – A lot of people underestimate just how important this is. Modelling is one of those industries you typically go into because you love the job. This outweighs any other perk. Thus, instead of worrying and stressing, embrace every moment and thoroughly enjoy what you do. This will show and it will impress clients. There is nothing they like to see more than fashion.

•    Flexible lifestyle – If you truly want to make it in this industry then you are going to have to be prepared to attend castings with barely any notice.

•    Learn how to take rejection – If you are going to make it in this industry then you need to learn how to take the word ‘NO’. You are not going to be booked for every single job you go for. Even the superstars of today, such as Erin O’Connor, say that they still get knocked back. Nine times out of ten it is no bad reflection on you. You simply don’t represent the route the client wants to go down. So don’t let a no dishearten you, rather it should make you more determined.

•    Positive mental attitude – Do you hate what you are wearing? Do you despise your makeup? It doesn’t matter. You have to wear it. Thus, train your mind to feel fabulous no matter what you are wearing.

•    Drink plenty of water and get enough sleep – No one wants a model with bad skin or bags under their eyes. You need to look after number one. This means drinking as much water as possible and trying to get your eight hours of sleep a night whenever possible.

Additionally, having a great smile and taking care of your teeth is important too. Make sure that you stay up on dental appointments and even seeking out an orthodontist if need be.

•    Know who you are as a model – There are many different types of modelling. It is unlikely that you are going to walk straight in and make it as a glamour model, a commercial model, a swimwear model, and a high fashion model all wrapped up into one. You need to know what type of modelling is going to suit you the most. Once you begin to make a name for yourself in the industry you will be able to dip into other areas of modelling.

•    Versatility is the key to success – Nobody wants a model who only knows how to rock one look and only has one pose in their range. You need to show versatility. You have to perform on demand and convey any emotion that is required of you.

•    Show off your personality – Finally, the world famous models of today all have distinct personalities. Look at Naomi Campbell or Cara Delevingne. They have strong characters. The biggest mistake aspiring models make is holding back. Be yourself. The worst thing you can ever be to a client is forgettable.

QUEEN PEN x Queen of the South

This post is sponsored by USA Network and Queen of the South, but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Anyone who knows me knows that I am a hustler and I learned to develop a tough skin really early on in life because the neighborhoods that I grew up in, did not start off as the prettiest. I had to learn to be resilient, book smart and street smart, fight for what it was that I wanted and never take "NO" for an answer.

Although my environment was a tad bit rough, I wouldn't change it for the world because it has made me a fighter and appreciate how far I have gotten in life without sacrificing my morals or beliefs for anyone.

  4. Co-Author of a book in Clinical Psychology
  5. Fitness/Nutrition business owner
  6. Professional dancer and model
  7. National Honor Society member

.... and the list goes on.

I say this not to brag about accomplishments, but use it as a reminder to help others who look like me know that there is more to life than what your current situation or environment is providing for you.

One thing I love about a good series is relating to the main character because it allows me to naturally put myself into their shoes and become immersed in the show for hours. That is how I currently am feeling about the new series Queen of the South. Babyyyyy when I tell you Teresa is a BAD A** , I mean it, and I can definitely relate to her because I consider myself a bad a** too (as any woman should, WE ARE POWERFUL).

queen-of-the-south.jpg

Queen of the South tells the story of Teresa Mendoza who fled to America from Mexico after her boyfriend was suspected of murder. In addition, she teams up with someone from her past to help bring down the leader of a drug trafficking ring that has her on the run. In Season 2, we see Teresa start to come into her own as a Queen Pin by recognizing her power and potential.

Summer Shopping on a Budget

I love the fact that summer is within our reach. After all, it means all the hot new clothes are making their appearance on the shop floor, and it definitely calls for a shopping trip in the very near future. But the trouble is that we might not have the biggest budget at the moment. After all, booking vacations and festivals can take a lot out of funds. However, there are some ways you can still enjoy a shopping trip for your summer wardrobe. In fact, here is how you can do some summer clothes shopping on a budget.

Stick to accessories which you can mix and match

Summer is a great time for accessories. After all, we love to wear sunglasses, oversized bright bags, and cute jewelry during the sunshine months. However, when we haven’t got much to spend, it’s a good idea to get some accessories which we can mix and match with our outfits. That way, we don’t have to spend a ton of money on a load of different accessories.

For example, go for some cute black sunglasses which are suitable to wear with a load of different outfits. That way, you can just put them on whether it’s with casual or formal wear. Also, you might want to go for some simple black and gold jewelry. That way, they can be worn with a range of different colored outfits to add some character. And the gold jewelry will look fantastic when you work on your tan during summer. Don’t forget an anklet too which is a must-have in the summer months.

Get some coupons for your summer purchases

Before you go on your shopping trip, you need to look to see if there are any deals going on at your favorite stores. After all, you don’t want to end up buying a new pair of shorts at one store to find they are cheaper elsewhere. If you want to get a wealth of new dresses and summery tops while you are limited to dollars, you should look to see if you can get some coupons. That way, you can reduce the cost of your summer purchases. If you would rather shop online, you can even get codes you can use online like a tillys promo code. That way, you can get new clothes for summer for a cheap rate.

Opt for one pair of sandals and flip flops

It’s easy to go mad when it comes to summer shoes. After all, there are more cute shoes around which are perfect for summer. But the truth is you only need a couple of summer shoes that you will practically live in during the summer months. After all, if you go for sandals in a neutral or a black color, they are bound to go with everything, and a pair of funky flip flops will also be perfect to take you from summer days to night. Remember that you don’t have to spend a small fortune on shoes. Look around to find a good deal on a pair which are cheap but still good quality.

..... And remember to get a few maxi dresses. After all, they are fab for taking you from day to night during the summer.

How To Pull Together The Perfect Outfit At The Last Minute

It’s happened to the best of us, hasn't it? We’ve gotten home from work eager to curl up on the sofa, order in, and catch up on our current Netflix obsession when disaster strikes! The horror of horrors, you get a friendly text reminding you about after work drinks, a friend's surprise party, or a cozy dinner with the in-laws and although you pretend you haven’t forgotten you totally have!

What’s The Occasion?

Figure out what event you’re supposed to be attending tonight and if you’ve received an actual invitation check that for any sign of a dress code. Next, consider the venue. Is it likely that jeans and a t-shirt will be out of place at an upscale restaurant downtown? More than likely yes, so shelve the hoodie and think about dresses, top and skirt combos or a dressy top, heels and smart jeans. Likewise, you don’t want to turn up at your nephew's sixth birthday party wearing a fur stole and maxi dress, so a cute top and skirt or a pretty casual day dress with flats is ideal.

Pick Out Items Accordingly

The best way to avoid a last-minute panic is to group clothes, not by style or color, but by occasion so all your casual, dressy and formal dresses are in one area, t-shirts, strappy tops and blouses are in another and shirts, skirts and trousers are somewhere else. That way, if you’ve been invited somewhere all you need to do is go the the correct area of your closet and pick out clothes that match the weather, venue and your personal style and off you go! Let’s assume you didn’t quite manage to accomplish this remember what you’ve worn to similar occasions previously and go along those lines. For most semi-formal occasions you can’t go wrong with a little black dress, smart jacket, or full length coat and a pair of classic navy or black heels.

Mix And Match Accessories

rocksbox-jewelry-subscription.jpg

These are what tie an outfit together so think carefully about colors, styles, and necklines. For instance, if you’re wearing a top with an intricate pattern or detailed neckline you’d do better to keep necklaces straightforward and elegant but if your outfit’s quite plain, then you can bling it up by wearing statement jewelry.

Those with certain allergies may find that hypoallergenic plastic earrings are less likely to irritate the skin while still looking beautiful. Choose accessories that aren’t too fiddly to get on because you don’t really have time to be messing around with delicate silver bracelets. Match your jewelry to your skin tone for better effect; warmer skin tones prefer the bronze colors of gold jewelry, while cooler skin tones compliment silver pieces, but of course it’s entirely up to you.

Be One Step Ahead

When this process works correctly you don’t need worry about being late! While in the shower be thinking about what to wear, lay your clothes out while mentally comparing jewelry and shoes to the dress, and while dressing, consider what makeup look you’re going for. By always being one step ahead you can mentally prepare yourself to make decisions quickly and on short notice.

CAPE Me Away: Fashion Collab x TOBI

Fall is here and I am SO EXCITED to pull out my stylish boots, coats and hats while coasting the LA  streets with my Starbucks in hand. This is my favorite season because I can really showcase my style and layering expertise, so when fashion powerhouse TOBI reached out to me to do a review I was uber excited!

TOBI is an online design label based in Los Angeles where LA is the source of their inspiration. What makes TOBI a unique online only retailer is that they design and develop all of their products and collections out of their downtown LA headquarters. With their quick garment productions from sketch done in only a few weeks, they are able to deliver the best of what’s now in LA.

What sealed the deal for me to work with this brand was their commitment to community service and scholarship with their TOBI Cares programs where they provide scholarships to deserving undergraduates, donate 1% of your purchase to a charity of your choice and sponsor and volunteer with many community organizations. A company that has affordable and amazing fashion pieces that supports the community is one that I can support wholeheartedly.

TOBI sent me their Garrison Cape Blazer which was a perfect addition to my Fall wardrobe collection. I have been wanting a cape blazer for the longest time because I love how they add an extra flair to a simple day causal look (as seen in the pics) or add drama to a night on the town look.

I wanted the focus to be all about the cape blazer because the red is such a statement piece, so I paired it with a sheer brown button up, boyfriend ripped jeans and my nude heels. I added the gold necklaces for added flair.

Are You All About Labels? Find Out In 4 Ways

Everywhere you go, you will see people wearing branded or "designer" clothing. It's likely many of the clothes you wear each day are from well-known fashion brands. Have you ever wondered why people including you actually buy designer? The answers might surprise you:

PERCEIVED QUALITY

When there's a choice between a well-known brand and an unknown one, most people will opt for the former. Why? The answer is simple: there is the perception that the garments are better quality! One of the reasons people buy particular fashion brands is because they trust them.

PSYCHOLOGY

It's no secret that most garments sporting top brand names are expensive. So, why do we spend so much money buying them, especially if we're broke? It might shock you to learn that psychology plays a big part in such buying decisions.

Many people want to feel important, and the clothes we wear can make that happen. Let's face it; if you wanted to impress someone with what you wear, you'd only buy branded items... generally speaking.

VANITY

Most of us love to show off something about ourselves. For many of us, clothing helps us to show off natural beauty. Whether we like to admit it or not, vanity is a key driver when it comes to buying branded clothing.

PERCEIVED COST SAVINGS

I mentioned a moment ago that branded garments are expensive. Sure, that's true in most cases - but not all of them! The Internet makes it possible for us to buy big-name brands at rock-bottom prices.

It could be down to online retailers having flash sales, for example. Or it might be end of season garments reduced to make way for new stock. One interesting fact is how online shoppers save money using discount codes. Here's an example of the buying habits of such savvy shoppers from Italy, the world's leader when it comes to fashion:

THE CATS OUT THE BAG....!!!

I'm SOOOOO excited to FINALLY share with you all a project that I have been harboring/working on for over a year now that has finally come to fruition. This project, MY BABY is my new introduction to my OOTD's and it is a faux music video (WATCH OUT BEY). I won't go into much more detail, because each concept will be different, but just know it's gonna be HAUTE!

This is the 1st installment of my video project and the concept behind it is based off of Jazmine Sullivan's "Mascara" and the idea that "SHE" always has to slay from head to toe to keep it lookin' right for her man so she can keep those coins ($$$) coming.... at least that is the character I'm playing.

This outfit choice was perfect because the bandage dress fit with the persona of the song and I bought it online and was quite please that it fit me so well (2 SNAPS). I decided to add some color and pair it with a red trench coat for that extra pop.

Check out the visuals and leave a comment :)

School of Fashion: Most Expensive Brands of the Year

These days we're all obsessed with just how much money other people have. We want to know who is rich, who is richer and who is the richest. Even the rich are obsessed with letting everyone know just how rich they are (smh). Remember when Forbes got in trouble with Donald Trump for suggesting that he was worth a mere $4.5 billion, OF COURSE he corrected them at $10 billion.

With sites like Just Richest keen on keeping us informed, it looks like our obsession with ultimate luxury is here to stay. Throughout history, nothing has smacked of opulence more than the clothes that people wear. What used to set apart kings and queens from their subjects, NOW separates the rich from the not so rich.

So what are the most expensive brands out there this year? Grab your pencils and pens kids and prepare to be schooled.

Giorgio Armani

Armani has become one of the world's most recognizable brands, thanks to its drive towards sophistication. It's original founders in 1975, Giorgio Armani and Sergio Galeotti, wanted to do haute couture, but since then, the brand has expanded into many areas, including ready to wear and interior design.

Over the following decades, celebrities began to take an interest in the otherwise little known Italian brand. Soon it was transformed from a curiosity for those in the industry into a mainstream offering. In the 1990s celebrities like Richard Gere and Michelle Pfeiffer catapulted the brand to fame. As a result, it garnered universal acclaim and is now worth an estimated $1.8 billion.

Dolce & Gabbana

Another pair of Italian designers, Dolce & Gabbana wanted to bring their own take on fashion to the global market. Starting a decade after Armani, they were again made famous by the desire of the elites to dress in the world's finest attire.

Recently, the Dolce & Gabbana collection was inspired by a fairy tale theme. Rich floral colours, high-fantasy styling and photo shoots set in ancient woods. It's like when Lord of the Rings met the catwalk.

Chanel

Chanel is one of those brands that has had an enduring legacy. It began in the 1920s under the auspices of Coco Chanel and ever since it has been a label that is synonymous with high-fashion and luxury.

But Chanel had a slightly different, almost hedonistic philosophy. It wanted it's clothes to be not only beautiful but also comfortable, If you were to truly live like a king you had to look great but also, look happy looking great.

Now worth $7 billion dollars Chanel is a globally recognized brand and a mainstay of the celebrity elite.

Louis Vuitton

Despite the fact that Louis Vuitton is most famous for its handbags and suitcases, the brand is worth more than all the others here combined. That said, Louis Vuitton are heavily involved in ready-to-wear and evening wear.

But practically every celebrity of note has at one time or another been seen sporting one of their designer handbags or luggage. And that's probably why the company has been valued at a lofty $28 billion.

Of course there are other successful fashion brands out there and new and up coming designers that are killing the game right now, but these are a few of the classics that steal the show.

What is your favorite fashion house brand?

Bandage Dress: Forever 21 | Cardigan: Liz & Bee | Boots: Rampage (Belk)

Clutch: Vintage Find | Necklace: Goodwill | Bracelets: H&M | Shades: Raybans

The BEST outfits always tend to be the ones that are not planned (at least in my opinion). While I was having a "I don't have anything to wear" fit, I decided you can never go wrong with all black and so here we are.

The great thing about wearing black is that it looks good on any body type and can make you look fashionably in an instant. I decided to pair this look with my Liz & Bee olive green cardigan and play with reds, golds, greens and purples with my accessories to add some color all the while not taking away from the overall look. I feel so #BlackGirlMagic mixed with "the revolution will not be televised" chic in this look. I love the cutouts in the sleeves of the dress because it puts an "edge" to my look and adds to the urban feel of the background. It's crazy how I have had this dress in my closet for so long and never thought to wear it like this.

I am so into combining street art and fashion because I love the abstract of the graffiti and how my outfits look against it. There is a lot of street art in Atlanta that I cannot wait to photograph with.
