Tired of Mall Store Trends? Here's Your Alternative!

There’s nothing wrong with the mall. It’s where the vast majority of Americans do their shopping, after all, and there are many good reasons for doing so: everything is in the same place, its convenient and there are always ongoing sales.

But let’s be honest, if you are into style and great clothing, the mall often lets you down. It might be great for the basics, but ultimately, no one wants to dress in tired, repetitive clothes that look exactly the same as everyone else’s.

The good news is that there has never been a better time for American fashionistas to find alternatives, and we’re going to take a look at some of those different options - so read on to find out more.

 Imports

Thanks to the Internet, we all have the power to buy from anywhere in the world these days. That means you aren’t restricted to local trends and fashions - you can tap into the styles of any country or city on the globe. Yes, it will cost you a little more in delivery and - possibly - import taxes. But if you love those Japanese denim jeans, it can often be cheaper to buy them directly from an online store in Tokyo and ship them over than it would be to buy the same pair from your local independent clothing store.

Boutiques

Independent stores give you an opportunity to find clothes that you might not find anywhere else.  If you want to expand your wardrobe, so it includes unique pieces, it’s one of your best and most accessible options. There are online clothing boutiques, and you’ll find real world independents in the trendy areas of every town and city in the country. They are worth supporting, too - most local boutiques rely heavily on a loyal following from their communities.

Thrift and vintage stores

My absolute FAV.....

Want to get more bang for your buck? Then head to your local thrift or retro store and start developing relationships with the owners and store staff. You can often spend hours looking in thrift and charity stores without finding anything nice at all, but if you start talking to the staff, you’ll find they will be happy to keep some of the good stuff for you. And here’s another top tip - head out to charity stores in the wealthier areas of your town or city. Some of the clothes and accessories that people hand over are incredible, and you can pick them up for next to nothing.

Get busy

Of course, there is another way to improve your current wardrobe without visiting a clothing store at all. If you can get handy with a needle and thread, why not start customizing your current gear? There is plenty of inspiration and tutorials online and in books, so get reading, learn how to customize, and you will be able to imprint your unique style on any item of clothing you currently own.

East African Gal

So it's supposedly Spring in the L.A. area, however, it does not feel like it at all. It has been more cooler and cloudy days than sunny and warm days. Hey, I am NOT complaining! As a Midwest gal (St. Louis to be exact), I am use to experiencing all 4 seasons and what TRUE Spring feels like (of course with more rain). But I did not expect L.A. to be this cool.

Not sure if many of you know, but I moved to the L.A. area from Atlanta last August to start my Doctorate program in Clinical and Neuropsychology (YAY!!) and I have just finished my first year. I could not be more proud of myself, for being able to accomplish my dream of getting into a doctoral program. The journey was long, but it was well worth it. This was the FIRST and ONLY school that I applied to and voila, ya girl got in! With that being said, I literally uprooted my life across the country and went that came a yard sale and everything went from furniture to most of my clothes. Needless to say, this year has been heavily focused on school, my clinical internship and work, so there has been NO TIME to go shopping.

.... and that's where this lovely outfit comes in.

This lovely creation happens to be 2 different dresses that I conveniently turned into a top and a pencil skirt ensemble. Desperate times call for desperate measure right? However, this is what makes fashion so beautiful, when you can create unique looks that look amazing.

African print anything is ALWAYS in season because it is so versatile and comes in an assortment of color patterns and it always makes me feel good when I can give an ode to the other half of my heritage. As always, black never goes out of style and I love how this dress converted very easily into a top and the cut outs add for a sexy and playful look.

80's Vibes w/ Subculture

:: OUTFIT DEETS ::

Jumpsuit: Subculture | Bandage Top: Subculture | Heels: Modern Vice | Jewelry: Vintage Find

Now for the next installment of my DOPE A** friends edition.... my boo's SUBCULTURE!!

Subculture is a style duo cultivated by Kareema Black and Autumn Foreman. They got their start by working events and shows for Cultivating Cultures LLC.  While Kareema is busy with PR and Marketing for the company, Autumn styles shoots, drives creative influences and designs original pieces for their brand. This past year, the majority of their designs were hand picked, one of a kind pieces and they made a name for themselves styling photo-shoots for different artists and models in the Atlanta area.

The past 8 months, Subculture has been expanding their brand, and reaching a broader audience. They have built a team of photographers, fitness gurus, models, stylists, make up artists, creative directors and more. By building a team, Subculture has become a source for entertainment, community outreach, and fashion in the Atlanta area..... With that being said, once a month, Subculture has an underground Sunday called “Whiskey and Yoga.”

Subculture is a brand that stands behind unity, love and openness, Subculture plans to make a lot of noise as they continue to develop their brand, meet new people and travel with their ideas.

I am loving this jumpsuit that they styled for me, it's perfect for spring because it is very lightweight. Since the color is very bold and bright, we paired it with a tan bandage top and nude strappy heels so that the jumpsuit would remain the focal point.

You can find out more about the style duo and their events HERE

#ShonnaTaughtYou 5 Tips to Help You Look Amazing in Anything You Wear

When you put on any outfit ready to face the day, you want to be sure that you look absolutely amazing. Hopefully, these tips will help you so you can feel confident all day long. Take a look!

Stand Up Straight

You need to have a good posture if you want to look amazing in anything you wear. This means standing tall with your chest out and shoulders back.

Make sure you keep your head up too. You don’t want it to look unnatural though, so practice a bit so it feels right. Having good posture will always make you look confident. It can knock pounds off your frame too! You might have to think about it at first, but soon it’ll be second nature to you. It’s worth doing this while you’re young so you don’t have to worry about it as you age.

Think Confident Thoughts

You need to give off an air of confidence, and to do that you need to think confident thoughts. If you feel negatively about yourself, it’ll show. Liking yourself and focusing on all of your good points is a brilliant way to look amazing in anything you wear.

Remember, there’s a difference between confidence and arrogance. You don’t want to come across as stuck up.

Wear the Right Underwear

There’s nothing worse than being able to see your underwear underneath what you’re wearing. You need to wear the right kind of underwear if you want to look your best. Visible panty lines and similar mishaps aren’t attractive. Make sure you choose your underwear based on your clothing.

Stockings can be a good choice for certain outfits, but you might need a strapless bra as well. You shouldn’t be able to tell what kind of underwear you have on at all ideally.

Avoid Eating Foods That Bloat You

Everybody is different when it comes to foods that bloat them. Try to be aware of the foods that affect you in this way and avoid eating them. Eating a lot of bread can bloat some people for example, and you won’t feel great if your tummy is huge. However, it’s different for everyone. Eat healthy foods that make you feel good and it’ll show.

Make Sure Your Clothes are ‘You’

Don’t try to wear clothes that you don’t feel are ‘you’. You need to make sure your clothes say something about your personality and that you feel comfortable and confident in them. Don’t try to be anything you’re not! Your clothes are an extension of your and your personality.

If you want to wear unique pieces then do that. If you’d rather wear more neutral clothes, do that. Don’t worry about what other people think!

If you bear these points in mind, you’ll look amazing in anything you choose to wear. You don’t need to be a supermodel to make people go ‘wow!’. Hope you love these tips and they work for you.

This past weekend I Headed back home to  St. Louis to see my family. While the weather was horrible the majority of the time (raining and dreary) I didn't let that stop my style!

I opted for this casual ensemble on Saturday because I knew I had a lot of running around to do. I didn't plan for this outfit to look as good as it did lol, I was rushing and just put something together... but I love the way these colors play off of each other to give me a fun Spring look. What's even better, this look can go from day to night... just put on a bad heel and your good to go!
