OOTD | Sitting Up In My Room

Living in Los Angeles is starting to grow on me (just a little). I think it's mainly because of my apartment in Downtown LA. I love the hustle and bustle of the city life, the urban streets, graffiti and art, immense array of shopping, restaurants, nightlife and best of all everything is walking distance! Living in downtown is like a whole different world compared to the mountains and palm tress that you would mostly see here.

This outfit for me is perfect for a casual day in Downtown LA, especially if you are walking and exploring the area because it provides you with comfort for walking while looking uber stylish.

Sweater: H&M  | Boyfriend Jeans: Old Navy  | Booties: Charlotte Russe

I decided to make the red sweater is the focus of this outfit by muting my bottom pieces (the black booties and the jeans) and adding a highlight accentuate the top (i.e. the gold jewelry) and I think it came out great as I got a lot of compliments from people walking the street. I still wanted to add a bit of edge to this look (going for a downtown urban feel), so I thought these ripped boyfriend jeans would do that.

I call this look.... downtown living.

Western Vibes | OOTD Halloween Edition

I am finally back to doing my outfit of the day (OOTD) visuals and I am too excited!! If you can recall, I started this project back in Spring/Summer 2016 when I was in Atlanta, but had to stop because I uprooted my life across the country to Los Angeles to start my doctorate Clinical Psychology program (I will do a post soon about my experience, etc.). It took me awhile (about a year to be exact) to find a crew that I vibe with and now the wait is ova!!

I thought this outfit was so perfect and I put it together off of a whim. It definitely was giving me "fashionable California hiking fall vibes." Since the weather here is so in-congruent to the season (aka it's hot as hell), I decided to pair these bell bottom jeans with a crop top and a faux fur vest to give western vibes.

This weather adjustment is so stressful because while it is fall in most places in the country in October, we just had this ridiculous heat wave this week where the temp was in the 100's!!! Talk about "pissed because you got a bomb fall wardrobe that you can barely wear". However, I will not be defeated.

Crop Top: Marshalls | Faux Fur Vest: Nordstroms | Jeans: Abercrombie and Fitch

Brim Hat: TJ Maxx | Boots (knee-length): Belk

Despite the weather.... Fall is my favorite time of year because it's when you can really show off your style and creative-ness through layering. During this time, I love to either play up the accessories (like hats, belts, scarves), or play up layering my outfits (pairing a blazer with a sweater, etc).

Color trends for this season that I am looking at doing will be plays off of emerald, orange, red, gold, plum, fuchsia and of course black.

Wicked Winter Wardrobes and Where to Find Them

While summer is great for showing off a healthy glow and revealing a bit of skin, winter is the ideal season for showing off your wardrobe. It’s the perfect excuse to let your sense of style do the talking as it’s really all we got in these chilly temperatures, forcing us to dress up in layers of clothes.

Spruce your winter style up this season by preparing your wardrobe for the seasonal changes, and you might just be able to snatch up a few of the best buys. They’ll all be gone by December, you know.

Look over your inventory first

Some wardrobes are neat and beautiful while others look a hot mess most of the time. If you belong to the last category, it’s a good idea to tidy up a bit before you start to assemble a winter style. A large wardrobe is also likely to hide a lot of gems which you don’t even know about - and if it’s rather small, you’ll probably benefit from the extra space.

Store away your summer clothes if you haven’t already done so; by vacuum sealing them, you’ll be able to stack away all of those summer dresses and loose tops without taking up any storage space. Put the neatly sealed packs in your suitcase, ready for whenever you need a mid-winter trip to sunnier shores.

Layers and combinations

The fashion industry would just love it if we all made a habit out of upgrading our wardrobes every season. A new autumn look for August, a few pieces of winter garments in November, mandatory spring fashion staples for March and, of course, an entirely new summer wardrobe in June.

It is not necessary, and you probably have a lot of clothes already to create a unique and exciting look with, so take a bit of pressure off your wallet and experiment with what you already have. Try different combinations of layers, and see if you’re able to assemble at least ten different outfits with what you have on hand.

Treat yourself to what you need

When you’ve gone through all of this, you might realize what you actually need in order to create more outfits. If you get tired of garments easily and feel a bit over it after a few months, you should consider spending money on a neat necklace or other jewelry instead. You will be excited about it for a lot longer, and will be able to show it off even when you’re wearing layers of clothes; head over to kopolonia and browse through some fashion staples of this season.

The easiest and cheapest way to upgrade your winter look is to add a few new accessories. You don’t have to go all out and buy every new piece of fluffy knit you can get your hands on - just go over what you have, assemble a few outfits, and treat yourself to what you actually need... Then you can face the snow and ice in style, effortlessly warm and fashionable without spending an entire paycheck on it.

Have fun with colors

Walking out into the gray streets lately, and all we see are black umbrellas. Black coats as well, jackets, scarves, you name it - everyone looks good in darker shades, so they all seem to wear it. Maybe it’s because we tend to gravitate towards conformity, trying not to stand out too much on a dull Tuesday morning in the middle of November - but it’s kind of sad, isn’t it?

Spruce your wardrobe and the view of your passersby up a bit this winter by investing in a statement faux fur. It will keep you ridiculously warm and cozy too, so you get to brighten everyone’s mood while staying comfortable. Pair it with your best skinny jeans, some sturdy ankle boots or those over-the-knee boots that are so trendy this season, and it should be easy enough to feel totally in-sync with winter.

If you really prefer your black wool coat, that’s alright - just think about other ways to introduce a bit of color in your life. Most people are intuitively good at this, and they’ll take a look at their own pale reflection staring back at them, and decide to put a bit of lipstick on for that extra glow.

It really helps, so take a look at this guide to find the kind of lip shades that may be the perfect match for your winter wardrobe.

Focus on staying warm

Some people don’t mind the snow and wind, and we see them walking around in t-shirts still. We’re not all like that and, if given the option, we would easily choose to stay warm and dry rather than looking stylish. Luckily, it’s easy to get the best of both worlds when you have such an amazing selection of knit sweaters to choose from.

When you invest in a proper chunky sweater, ala those Marius sweaters, you’ll be able to stay dry and cozy. You can just toss one on before a quick trip to the grocery store, and its timeless design will keep you from growing tired of it.

By buying quality pieces of clothing, you’ll be able to silence the consumerist inside of you as well - you know, that voice that moved into your head when you turned fourteen, which keeps telling you to buy something new.

Take care of the clothes and accessories you buy now instead, and they’ll hang around for a longer time. You might even be able to let your daughter move into that chunky knit sweater if you take good enough care of it, or watch her rock the same leather bag you used to pride yourself on a few years back.

Winter fashion is exciting, but it should also be sustainable.

Tired of Mall Store Trends? Here's Your Alternative!

There’s nothing wrong with the mall. It’s where the vast majority of Americans do their shopping, after all, and there are many good reasons for doing so: everything is in the same place, its convenient and there are always ongoing sales.

But let’s be honest, if you are into style and great clothing, the mall often lets you down. It might be great for the basics, but ultimately, no one wants to dress in tired, repetitive clothes that look exactly the same as everyone else’s.

The good news is that there has never been a better time for American fashionistas to find alternatives, and we’re going to take a look at some of those different options - so read on to find out more.

Thanks to the Internet, we all have the power to buy from anywhere in the world these days. That means you aren’t restricted to local trends and fashions - you can tap into the styles of any country or city on the globe. Yes, it will cost you a little more in delivery and - possibly - import taxes. But if you love those Japanese denim jeans, it can often be cheaper to buy them directly from an online store in Tokyo and ship them over than it would be to buy the same pair from your local independent clothing store.

Independent stores give you an opportunity to find clothes that you might not find anywhere else.  If you want to expand your wardrobe, so it includes unique pieces, it’s one of your best and most accessible options. There are online clothing boutiques, and you’ll find real world independents in the trendy areas of every town and city in the country. They are worth supporting, too - most local boutiques rely heavily on a loyal following from their communities.

Thrift and vintage stores

My absolute FAV.....

Want to get more bang for your buck? Then head to your local thrift or retro store and start developing relationships with the owners and store staff. You can often spend hours looking in thrift and charity stores without finding anything nice at all, but if you start talking to the staff, you’ll find they will be happy to keep some of the good stuff for you. And here’s another top tip - head out to charity stores in the wealthier areas of your town or city. Some of the clothes and accessories that people hand over are incredible, and you can pick them up for next to nothing.

Get busy

Of course, there is another way to improve your current wardrobe without visiting a clothing store at all. If you can get handy with a needle and thread, why not start customizing your current gear? There is plenty of inspiration and tutorials online and in books, so get reading, learn how to customize, and you will be able to imprint your unique style on any item of clothing you currently own.

4 Fall | Winter Trends Not To Miss!

It’s September, and that means one thing, you can start legitimately looking at the fashion trends for the next season! Hooray! Below I break down some of the hottest looks and how to style them to your body.

Luxe Fabrics

We are going to see a lot of opulent and luxury fabric on the market this FW season. Think flowing velvet dresses, sequins tops and pants. Anything that catches the light and looks like it costs a fortune is going to work well. Haha!

Velvet Midi Skirt: $24-

Velvet Midi Skirt: $24-

When wearing velvet, be careful to get the right cut for your body. Some women look great in bias cut velvet dresses that hugs the figure. But if there are a few places that you'd rather the fabric not cling to, then try a skater style dress that is fit and flare. This will give you a nice waist, without having to worry about it being skin tight.

Wearing sequins is the most fun. They are a great way of getting dressed up for a night or even elevating a more basic outfit. The thing with sequins is that as they are metallic, they need to be carefully matched to your skin tone. Cooler skin tones suit silvers, blues, and pinks, whereas warmer skin tones can wear gold, red and copper.

Remember too that you can reuse items from previous seasons that fit this remit like the gold sequined jacket.

Chunky Heels

Another major trend in fashion for FW 2016 is the chunky platform heel. Ok, so it's not exactly alien to us now, but this season look is distinctive in a few specific ways.

Suedette Platform Mule: $38-

Suedette Platform Mule: $38-

Firstly to be on trend you will need to rock a cleated sole. That is a large rubber platform, which has distinct threads that can be seen, even when your foot is on the floor.

Secondly this season it's all about the punk look, so go black with you boot choice. You can even liven them up with some colorful laces.

Lasting they have to be heavy looking. The advantage of this is that they are probably much more stable than a pair of stilettos for stomping around town in.

Focus on the waist

A massive trend this season is to accentuate the waist. Belts, corsets & cinchers are all being worn on the outside for a slight burlesque feel. If your waist isn't you best feature, this look can work well for you. This is because accessories like wide belts help to create a waist where there wouldn't normally be one.

Use a cincher under your clothes to get a more of an hourglass frame, then over the top use a wide style like an obi belt to shape your outfit and figure.

Smooth Obi Belt: $29.90-

Faux Sheep Skin

Dorothy Perkins Belted Faux Shearling Gilet: $39-

Dorothy Perkins Belted Faux Shearling Gilet: $39-

Faux sheepskin or shearling as it is more often known is going to be big this season. That's good news for all those women that jumped on the trend at the end of last winter. They can get out their coats and jackets for a second run.

If you fancy giving this look a go, just remember to check whether the shearling is treated to be waterproof? If not, get some spray and treat it yourself or you could end up looking like drowned rat instead of a fashionista!

#ShonnaTaughtYou 5 Tips to Help You Look Amazing in Anything You Wear

When you put on any outfit ready to face the day, you want to be sure that you look absolutely amazing. Hopefully, these tips will help you so you can feel confident all day long. Take a look!

denim and leather-the kashonna files

Stand Up Straight

You need to have a good posture if you want to look amazing in anything you wear. This means standing tall with your chest out and shoulders back.

Make sure you keep your head up too. You don’t want it to look unnatural though, so practice a bit so it feels right. Having good posture will always make you look confident. It can knock pounds off your frame too! You might have to think about it at first, but soon it’ll be second nature to you. It’s worth doing this while you’re young so you don’t have to worry about it as you age.

Think Confident Thoughts

You need to give off an air of confidence, and to do that you need to think confident thoughts. If you feel negatively about yourself, it’ll show. Liking yourself and focusing on all of your good points is a brilliant way to look amazing in anything you wear.

Remember, there’s a difference between confidence and arrogance. You don’t want to come across as stuck up.

Wear the Right Underwear

There’s nothing worse than being able to see your underwear underneath what you’re wearing. You need to wear the right kind of underwear if you want to look your best. Visible panty lines and similar mishaps aren’t attractive. Make sure you choose your underwear based on your clothing.

Stockings can be a good choice for certain outfits, but you might need a strapless bra as well. You shouldn’t be able to tell what kind of underwear you have on at all ideally.

Avoid Eating Foods That Bloat You

Everybody is different when it comes to foods that bloat them. Try to be aware of the foods that affect you in this way and avoid eating them. Eating a lot of bread can bloat some people for example, and you won’t feel great if your tummy is huge. However, it’s different for everyone. Eat healthy foods that make you feel good and it’ll show.

Make Sure Your Clothes are ‘You’

Don’t try to wear clothes that you don’t feel are ‘you’. You need to make sure your clothes say something about your personality and that you feel comfortable and confident in them. Don’t try to be anything you’re not! Your clothes are an extension of your and your personality.

If you want to wear unique pieces then do that. If you’d rather wear more neutral clothes, do that. Don’t worry about what other people think!

If you bear these points in mind, you’ll look amazing in anything you choose to wear. You don’t need to be a supermodel to make people go ‘wow!’. Hope you love these tips and they work for you.
