Give Yourself A Monthly Fashion Treat

It seems that these days we are not always able to give ourselves that little treat, but it's something we have to do- it makes us feel good! Maybe we don't have the budget to afford high-end brands every week, but surely we must take advantage of our paycheck at the end of the month and have a mini splurge on something that makes us feel a little bit better? Here are some ideas to give yourself a fashion treat.

“It's Been A Hard Month!”

If it's been a particularly difficult month, with emotional highs and lows, give yourself that treat you've been wanting for so long. Of course, maybe you don't have the money for that Mulberry handbag but you could go for the purse instead? If you've had a hard month, and you need that little something to keep you “clutching on”, then maybe a clutch bag will give you that bit of happiness.

the-kashonna-files-aurate-aurate-newyork-jewelry.jpg

“Give Me Some Bling!”

If we need some bling in our lives, then we can go for a little something that adds that extra shine. It doesn't have to be a change from head to toe; you can buy some gold earrings that add a bit of dazzle to any modest getup. Or if you're looking to make that definitive statement, some sparkly heels can make you feel that bit better and give you a spring in your step. A bit of bling is always what the doctor recommends!

 “Let's Hit The Town”

You've had a bad month, you've had so much stress, and you want to just hit the town and forget about it all! Depending on your taste, you can go for a cocktail dress if you want to head to the upmarket or demure occasions, or head straight to the shoe shop and get those stilettos so you can hit the clubs! When Saturday night comes around, we can throw off the shackles of the working week, and the difficult month, by hitting the town with our girlfriends and making the most of the night.

How do you treat yourself??

Interested in Modelling? Tips For Helping You Succeed

Modelling is undoubtedly one of the most fiercely competitive working industries of the modern day (I should know as I’ve modeled professionally for many years). There are so many young men and women who are looking to make it in this area, however, there is no room for everybody to become a top model. This post is designed to ensure you use all of the tools at your disposal to help you succeed. So, keep reading to discover some secrets of becoming a thriving model in today’s market.

•    Love what you do and let it show – A lot of people underestimate just how important this is. Modelling is one of those industries you typically go into because you love the job. This outweighs any other perk. Thus, instead of worrying and stressing, embrace every moment and thoroughly enjoy what you do. This will show and it will impress clients. There is nothing they like to see more than fashion.

•    Flexible lifestyle – If you truly want to make it in this industry then you are going to have to be prepared to attend castings with barely any notice.

•    Learn how to take rejection – If you are going to make it in this industry then you need to learn how to take the word ‘NO’. You are not going to be booked for every single job you go for. Even the superstars of today, such as Erin O’Connor, say that they still get knocked back. Nine times out of ten it is no bad reflection on you. You simply don’t represent the route the client wants to go down. So don’t let a no dishearten you, rather it should make you more determined.

•    Positive mental attitude – Do you hate what you are wearing? Do you despise your makeup? It doesn’t matter. You have to wear it. Thus, train your mind to feel fabulous no matter what you are wearing.

•    Drink plenty of water and get enough sleep – No one wants a model with bad skin or bags under their eyes. You need to look after number one. This means drinking as much water as possible and trying to get your eight hours of sleep a night whenever possible.

Additionally, having a great smile and taking care of your teeth is important too. Make sure that you stay up on dental appointments and even seeking out an orthodontist if need be.

•    Know who you are as a model – There are many different types of modelling. It is unlikely that you are going to walk straight in and make it as a glamour model, a commercial model, a swimwear model, and a high fashion model all wrapped up into one. You need to know what type of modelling is going to suit you the most. Once you begin to make a name for yourself in the industry you will be able to dip into other areas of modelling.

•    Versatility is the key to success – Nobody wants a model who only knows how to rock one look and only has one pose in their range. You need to show versatility. You have to perform on demand and convey any emotion that is required of you.

•    Show off your personality – Finally, the world famous models of today all have distinct personalities. Look at Naomi Campbell or Cara Delevingne. They have strong characters. The biggest mistake aspiring models make is holding back. Be yourself. The worst thing you can ever be to a client is forgettable.

A Conversation with the RealReal: High-End Luxury Reseller

There was once a time in the country when talk of high-end luxury items included talk of item scarcity and high price tags. Because of this, it was once uncommon to own these items for the average consumer. However, the recent explosion of the resale market for luxury items is making for a different reality. The RealReal is a leader in this new $6 billion-dollar market.

The company operates on the consignment business model. Clients turn over high-end items they no longer wear to the company. When the item is sold, both the company and the client receive a portion of the proceeds.

The company has been responsible for eight million items sold through consignment. These items include clothing, fashion accessories, and household items. The sales have taken place on the company's website and through stores located in Los Angeles and New York. The company is currently valued at $450 million.

The chief merchant for the RealReal is Rati Levesque. Recently, Ms. Levesque took a moment to share some thoughts about the RealReal…

How Would You Characterize The Service You Offer To Customers

I view our services as a gateway drug of sorts for our customers. Individuals who in the past could not own an item manufactured by Louis Vuitton can now do so at a lower price. The customer purchases a product from us that exceeds all expectations they possessed prior to the purchase. The customer will then want a Louis Vuitton bag to go with the item.

There Is No Stigma Attached To Items Being Second-Hand

A favorite concept of mine is the luxury item life-cycle. Items are crafted with quality, customers make good purchases, then customers resell the item. These luxury items are maintaining a decent value for resell purposes. This causes more individuals to view their purchases of these items as investments more than idle purchases.

How Do You Help Customers Understand The Process

My job as a merchant for RealReal is to educate clients and customers. I provide advice on what is hot, and what is not. I also tell clients what a good idea might be to sell at the present time and what they should perhaps hold onto for the time being. We are numbers crunchers that pull data constantly. Our prices are adjusted according to supply and demand, so this is important to communicate to clients.

What Item Has Performed Well Lately

Over the last two-and-a-half years luxury watches have been selling really well. The interest of millennials in these watches have really been on the rise. Top-tier brands have sold in high numbers to the younger generation who have even shown an interest in vintage brands.

What Brands Are Doing Well

All classic brands have performed well for us. Individuals have a desire to craft a look that separates them from the crowd. The social media age was beginning to make everything look the same. People are in search of unique items that are authentic.

How Do Stores Maintained By The Company Function

Our stores in a lot of ways are mini-warehouses. This is because every item in the store is also available for purchase on the website. Every item in our brick and mortar locations have a chip in them for immediate location. When a customer in a store takes an item into a room to check the fit, the status of the item will immediately change to "on hold" online.

Low Key Outfit Ideas For The Work Christmas Party

Most families are looking forward to Christmas with excitement. The attitude in the office is often similar. Coworkers and clients regard the Christmas party as one of the biggest – if not the biggest – social event of the year. Indeed, the party gives your management team the opportunity to thank everyone after a long year of projects and hard work. Additionally, employees expect to be entertained, as it’s a way for everyone to relax before the holiday and let go of the stress they’ve accumulated throughout the year. Besides, it’s the ideal occasion to get to know employees you don’t usually work with or see – such as that remote worker, for instance. You can be sure that most teams develop stronger bonds and connections during the party than during any team building workshop!

But, ultimately, for employees, the Christmas party gives you the chance to shine and look your best without having to wear your typical office outfits.

Something simple but effective

Should you buy an extravagant party dress for the occasion? While it might be tempting, you need to be realistic. You may not have many opportunities to wear a fancy party dress. Instead, you can opt for a different approach that ensures you’re not wasting your money on clothes you can only wear once. A maxi dress is a perfect alternative to the expensive party dress: It can combine the ideal mixture of casual wear and elegance, making it appropriate for most occasions. If you don’t have any adequate maxi dress, click here to see a selection of trendy and not summery dresses. Indeed, you can’t decently turn up to a Christmas party wearing a beach dress with a palm tree pattern!

Beautify yourself!

When it comes to beauty, less is always more, especially in a work environment. Indeed, leave the dramatic smokey eyes and glitter nails to a night out between friends. Your office Christmas party needs a different kind of attention. Beauty salons tend to get overbooked during that period, so make sure to plan your appointment ahead, so that you can get your nails or hair removal done professionally for the party. Do make sure to maintain your skin routine – if you haven’t switched your summer cream for a moisturizing lotion yet, it’s time to ditch the summer routine to focus on keeping your skin hydrated and protected against the cold.

Accessories? Just add some sparkles

Last, but not least, turn your maxi dress into a party outfit with the right accessories. In other words, you need party shoes that are comfortable and practical. Why practical? Because just like your maxi dress, you want to be able to wear your shoes more than once. A pair of simple bow mules can keep your feet happy all night long, and steal the show from everyone else. For a touch a glitter,  you can pick mules with a glitter or metal front strap that will shine under the disco lights. Mules are also a big trend with skinny jeans at the moment so that you can be sure that your investment will not be wasted!

Keeping your party outfit low key comes with a dual advantage. Firstly, you save your budget for Christmas shopping. Secondly, this keeps you looking professional and polished at your office event!

Accessorizing: The Right (And Wrong) Way To Get Creative

The accessories you wear can make an instant impact on your look, lift any outfit, and help you stand out from the crowd. But accessorizing the wrong way can result in a severe style disaster. Let’s take a look at everything you need to know about how to accessorize the right way, and make sure you stay on point, on-trend, and avoid making mistakes.

Keep It Simple

While accessories can lift any outfit, they are also capable of overpowering it completely. You might wear an attractive bunch of bangles as a highlight, for example, but combining it with five or six necklaces is probably overdoing it - and vice versa. Too much jewelry can look a little trashy, so if you want to pile it on, only focus on one particular area and go plain and straightforward everywhere else.

Be Appropriate

Don’t turn up for work wearing your chunkiest, dangly earrings - simple and professional is all you need. Keep your playful jewelry and accessories for nights out and special occasions.

Don’t Hide

Accessories should complement your clothes, not hide or overpower them. It’s the same principle for your face. A large, low brimmed hat paired with an enormous pair of sunglasses of your choice will make you appear like you are trying to hide, and won’t do your appearance any favors. So, if you are wearing a hat, be sensible about your choice of eyewear. And if you do go for the chunky looking glasses, consider dressing in a smaller hat, cap, or even a headscarf.

It’s All About The Bag & Shoes

The plainest of outfits can look stunning with the simple addition of a great pair of shoes - and even more so when you have a bag or a clutch to match. There’s no need to splash out hundreds - or thousands - of dollars on a new pair of Louboutins, however. There are plenty of budget-friendly brands out there and off-season sales where you can pick up bargains and look great for less.

Highlight Your Best Points

Accessories not only include your outer features, but your inner ones too! A bra con be disastrous to your look, especially if it's the wrong fit and not made for your body type. Knix's comfy bras are perfect for your specific body type and just as the name says, they are comfy too!

Color On Monochrome

If you are wearing a monochrome outfit, choose a more exciting color scheme for your accessories. Similarly, if you are going out in a colorful floral print dress, keep your jewelry and accessories nice and straightforward. Use the color of your accessories to highlight what you are wearing, too. For example, if you are wearing brown clothing, you might offset it with amber or orange stones, or a yellow scarf and shoes.

As you can see, it’s easy to get accessorizing wrong - but it won't’ take much to get it right. If you have any tips to share, feel free to do so below!

Happy Thursday!

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday with you loved ones and are enjoying your time off (if you received it) because I know I am!! It feels so good to have a month off from my doctoral program and internship to just relax and not do a damn thang (raise your hand if you can relate).

While I'm on my break, I plan on "putting in werk" to get you all as many posts as possible because I feel as though I've been very neglectful lately with everything that I have going on with school (I promise imma do better in the New Year y'all).

wilsons-leather-knee-high-boots-the-kashonna-files-fashion-style-ootd-blogger-natural-hair-blog.jpgg

School has been going great! I am learning so much that has been so applicable in not only my internship, but life in general. I am entering the 2nd semester of my 2nd year and time has been going by fast.... only 2 1/2 more years to go!!!

As far as my internship, it is INTENSE but rewarding at the same time and I am feeling like a Clinical Psychologist/Neuro-Psychologist everyday. I am fortunate enough to have the opportunity to gain experience in a multidisciplinary behavioral health environment where my patient demographic spans the DSM. I feel so honored to be able to help others who are going through difficulties to help them gain control and insight of their lives.

I've also finished up a tedious application process for a Health Professions Scholarship for the Air Force to be an Air Force Psychologist. The reason I decided to start my career this route is because the training is impeccable and I will have the opportunity to not only gain experience in advanced and new research techniques in the field, but I will have the opportunity to work in different areas of the field (providing therapeutic services, consulting with the Dept. of Defense and other governmental agencies, Neuropsychological Testing, Deployment clearance testing, etc...). I find out in the New Year if I get accepted or not.... *FINGERS CROSSED*

If you all want to hear more about being in a Clinical Psychology doctoral program... COMMENT BELOW or EMAIL ME and I will gladly respond :-)

OOTD | Sitting Up In My Room

Living in Los Angeles is starting to grow on me (just a little). I think it's mainly because of my apartment in Downtown LA. I love the hustle and bustle of the city life, the urban streets, graffiti and art, immense array of shopping, restaurants, nightlife and best of all everything is walking distance! Living in downtown is like a whole different world compared to the mountains and palm tress that you would mostly see here.

This outfit for me is perfect for a casual day in Downtown LA, especially if you are walking and exploring the area because it provides you with comfort for walking while looking uber stylish.

I decided to make the red sweater is the focus of this outfit by muting my bottom pieces (the black booties and the jeans) and adding a highlight accentuate the top (i.e. the gold jewelry) and I think it came out great as I got a lot of compliments from people walking the street. I still wanted to add a bit of edge to this look (going for a downtown urban feel), so I thought these ripped boyfriend jeans would do that.

I call this look.... downtown living.

Wicked Winter Wardrobes and Where to Find Them

While summer is great for showing off a healthy glow and revealing a bit of skin, winter is the ideal season for showing off your wardrobe. It’s the perfect excuse to let your sense of style do the talking as it’s really all we got in these chilly temperatures, forcing us to dress up in layers of clothes.

Spruce your winter style up this season by preparing your wardrobe for the seasonal changes, and you might just be able to snatch up a few of the best buys. They’ll all be gone by December, you know.

Look over your inventory first

Some wardrobes are neat and beautiful while others look a hot mess most of the time. If you belong to the last category, it’s a good idea to tidy up a bit before you start to assemble a winter style. A large wardrobe is also likely to hide a lot of gems which you don’t even know about - and if it’s rather small, you’ll probably benefit from the extra space.

Store away your summer clothes if you haven’t already done so; by vacuum sealing them, you’ll be able to stack away all of those summer dresses and loose tops without taking up any storage space. Put the neatly sealed packs in your suitcase, ready for whenever you need a mid-winter trip to sunnier shores.

Layers and combinations

The fashion industry would just love it if we all made a habit out of upgrading our wardrobes every season. A new autumn look for August, a few pieces of winter garments in November, mandatory spring fashion staples for March and, of course, an entirely new summer wardrobe in June.

It is not necessary, and you probably have a lot of clothes already to create a unique and exciting look with, so take a bit of pressure off your wallet and experiment with what you already have. Try different combinations of layers, and see if you’re able to assemble at least ten different outfits with what you have on hand.

Treat yourself to what you need

When you’ve gone through all of this, you might realize what you actually need in order to create more outfits. If you get tired of garments easily and feel a bit over it after a few months, you should consider spending money on a neat necklace or other jewelry instead. You will be excited about it for a lot longer, and will be able to show it off even when you’re wearing layers of clothes; head over to kopolonia and browse through some fashion staples of this season.

The easiest and cheapest way to upgrade your winter look is to add a few new accessories. You don’t have to go all out and buy every new piece of fluffy knit you can get your hands on - just go over what you have, assemble a few outfits, and treat yourself to what you actually need... Then you can face the snow and ice in style, effortlessly warm and fashionable without spending an entire paycheck on it.

Have fun with colors

Walking out into the gray streets lately, and all we see are black umbrellas. Black coats as well, jackets, scarves, you name it - everyone looks good in darker shades, so they all seem to wear it. Maybe it’s because we tend to gravitate towards conformity, trying not to stand out too much on a dull Tuesday morning in the middle of November - but it’s kind of sad, isn’t it?

Spruce your wardrobe and the view of your passersby up a bit this winter by investing in a statement faux fur. It will keep you ridiculously warm and cozy too, so you get to brighten everyone’s mood while staying comfortable. Pair it with your best skinny jeans, some sturdy ankle boots or those over-the-knee boots that are so trendy this season, and it should be easy enough to feel totally in-sync with winter.

If you really prefer your black wool coat, that’s alright - just think about other ways to introduce a bit of color in your life. Most people are intuitively good at this, and they’ll take a look at their own pale reflection staring back at them, and decide to put a bit of lipstick on for that extra glow.

It really helps, so take a look at this guide to find the kind of lip shades that may be the perfect match for your winter wardrobe.

Focus on staying warm

Some people don’t mind the snow and wind, and we see them walking around in t-shirts still. We’re not all like that and, if given the option, we would easily choose to stay warm and dry rather than looking stylish. Luckily, it’s easy to get the best of both worlds when you have such an amazing selection of knit sweaters to choose from.

When you invest in a proper chunky sweater, ala those Marius sweaters, you’ll be able to stay dry and cozy. You can just toss one on before a quick trip to the grocery store, and its timeless design will keep you from growing tired of it.

By buying quality pieces of clothing, you’ll be able to silence the consumerist inside of you as well - you know, that voice that moved into your head when you turned fourteen, which keeps telling you to buy something new.

Take care of the clothes and accessories you buy now instead, and they’ll hang around for a longer time. You might even be able to let your daughter move into that chunky knit sweater if you take good enough care of it, or watch her rock the same leather bag you used to pride yourself on a few years back.

Winter fashion is exciting, but it should also be sustainable.

Arm Candy: Style Advice For Your Significant Other

Many women find themselves in a tricky situation at some point in their life. Let’s see if some of this sounds similar to anything you have experienced.

After all, you love your significant other for everything they are. Your relationship is good, you feel like it’s built to last, and you’re genuinely good for one another. You have managed to deal with each other’s annoying habits and it looks like you’re going to stand the test of time.

The only downside? You’re stylish, you’re fashion-conscious, and you know how to put an outfit together even if you’re sleep-deprived and in a rush.

And your partner? He’s… well… he’s rather challenged in that department. That seems to be about the best way of putting it!

While your partner should always be the one who decides on his style ultimately, there’s nothing wrong with giving a few pointers and showing what he might be doing wrong. While you might have the grooming and style down when it comes to your own appearance, that doesn’t necessarily mean you’re fully up-to-date when it comes to men’s hair styles and what should be finding a place in your boyfriend's wardrobe. So you can help him, run your eye over the following pointers, and you might both find a whole new him that completes the picture of your perfect romance.

#1 - Manscaping

We’ve all heard the word, but what is manscaping and how does it concern your boyfriend?

The term is pretty simple. It means how a man grooms himself, predominantly when it comes to body hair. It’s how he keeps his chest hair under control and, if he has facial hair, how he wears it. There’s plenty of advice online about the latest trends which can help him be as style-conscious and up-to-date as you are.

#2 - Understand His Proportions

Proportions are tough enough for us ladies, and we have a natural figure that dips in at the waist to help to guide us. No such luck for men, who are pretty much straight up and down. The proportions you have to be particularly aware of are the length of his legs in relation to his back.

As a general rule, the shorter his legs are, the shorter his shirts and tops should be. Wearing these items longer than below the hip bone on short legs can make him appear stumpier, even if he’s actually over 6ft. For someone with a short back and long legs, the opposite is true; opt for longer styles to help create the perfect overall effects.

#3 - Hair Today, And Tomorrow

Men’s hair has changed relatively little in centuries; since guys got rid of the powdered wig the general trend has been short and neat. That’s changed somewhat in recent years with “a bit less short and a bit less neat” becoming more popular, but ultimately, men’s hair is a tale of conformity.

Does it have to be though? If you both like the idea, why not do something truly different that can define his style through its individuality? Hair always grows back or he can throw a hat on, so maybe it’s worth trying something a bit more out there!

8 Style Tips For Looking Good on a Budget

If you’re a bit of a style maven, but find that your budget and credit card bill don’t allow you to be as stylish as you like, then it can be a challenge. There is the constant battle between looking good, feeling good, and avoiding getting yourself into debt unnecessarily. But you know what, your wardrobe doesn’t have to suffer. You can still style yourself well and look good on a bit more of a shoestring budget. There are just a few tips and tricks to learn to help you along the way. You just need to know what they are so you can look out for them. Here are some of my top style tips for dressing well on a budget.

1. If you have a cheaper blazer or jacket, then the chances are that they have some pretty cheap looking buttons and embellishments on them. But the key to shopping on a budget is to not take things at face value. Can you remove some of the embellishments or replace the cheap plastic buttons for some more stylish looking metal ones? If so, your jacket or blazer can look immediately upgraded, at only the cost of a few buttons. So some basic sewing skills are a must for any fashionista!

2. Keeping things simple is a great to look good for less. Take your handbag or purse, for example. Some bags have embellishments on them that just look cheap and tacky. It is pretty hard to do embellishments well, when you’re on a budget, in my opinion. So opt for a more plain and simple looking bag, rather than one with buttons or buckles all over. They bag will be much more versatile this way too, so you’ll be able to wear it with a large amount of outfits.

3. When you want to look good but spend less, there are also some shopping tips to follow, not just style tips. One of which is to shop online. There are many ways to save money when you shop online. Quite often there are discounts online that wouldn’t be in the regular stores, as well as looking on discount sites like Coupon Sherpa. Again, you wouldn’t get these kinds of discounts in the stores as they are only available online. You can often get discounts for signing up for mailing lists online too, so be sure to look out for those potential discounts. I know some people that are a bit wary of shopping online, especially when it comes to fashion. But at the end of the day, you could always try something on in a store to make sure you know what size or fit to get. Then you can go home and buy it online, looking for a coupon or discount to get it cheaper. Why pay more if you don’t need to?

4. If you can’t afford certain materials, then you need to remember that some styles and materials will look more expensive than others. Take, for example, some pumps in faux leather or faux suede. The faux suede are going to look more expensive than the faux leather ones, so they would be a better material to choose. Having said that, they will only look better if they are darker colors. Beige or nude faux suede can look quite tacky, so only opt for the fake stuff if it is in darker colors. They can look just as good as the real stuff when you do.

5. Along similar lines, there are other materials that are going to look more expensive than others. Take linen, cotton, and tweed for clothing styles, for example. These are all materials that often look much more expensive than they actually are. So some linen shorts or pants in summer, are going to look more expensive than they really are. Just make sure that you keep the clothes wrinkle-free. Too many creases can make things look less expensive. So a good iron or a clothes steamer is a great investment for any wardrobe.

6. The color of your clothes often is a good indicator of how expensive clothes are. Some patterns or colors can make clothes look quite cheap, so you do need to take your time to look for the good stuff when you’re out shopping. The second thing that you need to do is to choose darker colors. There are a lot of ways to hide how inexpensive clothes are when they are darker. So navy, browns, blacks (and some nudes) are good color choices for clothes to look more expensive.

7. Some coats, jeans, or jackets might come with belts or accessories. But often if these are of the budget variety, then the belts or accessories are pretty budget too. So swapping out these extras or accessories is a great idea. If you can find a funky or vintage belt in somewhere like a thrift store, then swap that out for the cheap option. It can upgrade the look of the jacket or coat pretty instantly. A quick little trick that can work wonders! Thrift shops are always a good idea to look for some hidden gems to accessorize with. You might not find a whole outfit that will work, but some accessories and other bits to use can often be found if you know what you’re looking for.

8. Most of the time, the inexpensive clothes are going to be the ones that aren’t lined. So investing in a slip (I say investing, but they’re actually pretty cheap), is a great way to make clothing look more expensive. It lines the clothes well so that they don’t look tacky and see through, and can often make the outfit look better on you. It will help the garment to flow better on you, as well as look more elegant. Plus, you’ve got the added bonus of avoiding some wardrobe malfunctions; always a good thing.

Have you got any tips or tricks when it comes to shopping and styling your outfits on a budget? Would love to hear what you think.
