Hacks For Shiny And Thick Hair

We all want to look and feel our most confident, and for many of us this will include taking the time to care for our hair. If you are trying to grow out your hair more or simply want it to feel thicker and shinier, here are some hacks you should try.

Keep it cool

For your hair to stay strong and shiny throughout your life you will need to make sure that you aren’t damaging it when you wash it. Hair is very sensitive to temperature and this can cause an issue for us when we take a shower. If you are washing your hair in the shower, try turning the temperature down, washing your hair and then clip it up out of the way while you turn the temperature back up to wash your body. This way your hair isn’t exposed to too much heat at once.

T-shirt towel

Ditch the towel, use your t shirt! Towels can be great for drying hair however they have a lot of fibers which can trap your strands and snap them. This can obviously cause a lot of damage and is something which is always a difficulty to overcome. However with a t shirt you don’t have the same type of fibers and you can easily just wrap it up, dry it off and leave your hair intact.

Avoid using heat

Heat can be an enemy to your hair, but sometimes it can be hard to avoid using heat when you want to try a different style. Heat is something you should use sparingly and it is better to use a high heat for a short amount of time than a lower heat for a long stretch of time. Also, try to avoid blow drying your hair and let it dry naturally.

Hair mask every week

You should be rubbing a hair mask into your locks every single week without fail. It might seem excessive but it is a way to keep your hair strong and it will make a massive difference to it overall. You can get a hair mask for curly hair, straight hair, oily hair and dry hair so you’ll be able to find one which suits your needs.

Braid it overnight

If you leave your hair down while you sleep, this can have a large impact on your hair and it can leave it dry and brittle as it comes into contact with the fibers of your pillow at night. To stop this happening you can use a protective hairstyle like a braid or a high bun/pineapple on top of your head to keep your hair together and strong overnight. Keep it loose and simple to avoid strain on your hair follicles. You’ll find that your hair starts to grow much if you do this, and it will be stronger overall.

Hair Talk: How Often Should You Deep Condition?

TheKaShonnaFiles.com

Think of deep conditioning like this- when you stop your life to watch Scandal, How To Get Away With Murder and Empire. Yes ladies, it's THAT NECESSARY! Deep conditioning, especially for my natural chicas is essential if you want to have healthy hair.  Not only does deep conditioning install moisture, improve elasticity and make your hair manageable for styling, it also provides key vitamins and nutrients to sustain your hair until your next wash day.

For me, I deep condition under my steamer after every wash, which is usually once every 2-3 weeks. The results leave my hair softer with more moisture, and less frizz when my hair is styled versus when I just co wash.

WHAT TO LOOK FOR IN A GOOD DEEP CONDITIONER

  • Penetration. A good deep conditioner should "go deep" into the hair shaft and stay there.

  • Emollients and Humectants. Your deep conditioner should contain lubricants that will help coat the hair for added slip and help to seal the cuticle which in turn will help prevent your hair from losing moisture and help alleviate frizz.

  • Protein. This is the most important ingredient that a deep conditioner should contain because protein is a macro nutrient that your body is made up of and needs multiple times a day. Protein will help your hair grow as well as build, strengthen and repair keratin.

Hydrated Curls after deep conditioning under the steamer

  1. Deep condition after every shampoo day.

  2. Add heat with a steamer or hooded dryer for at least 30 minutes to open your hair shaft to penetrate  and increase absorption rate (time depends on hair porosity).

  3. Rinse with cool water to close the cuticle and prep for styling.
